For those of you that were on Oppo this morning, you might have seen my thread about the car my brother-in-law !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! gods yesterday morning.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
He is car shopping today, and has narrowed it down to three different cars, and is hoping to buy one of them tonight.
He wrote me and gave me these three links. I need your help, Oppo.
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! - 102K miles - $8900
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! - 4cyl - 84K miles - $12.5K
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! - 132K miles - $8500
I know nothing about these vehicles. Can anyone tell me:
Which one is the best value.
Which one is known for the least problems.
Which one is most likely to survive between 20K mile oil changes?

In my opinion, the 4runner is going to be the most durable of the bunch.

I'm liking the Toyota and the Nissan. The Acura reminds me too much of an CRV

None of the above, he gets a fucking Prius. Cone of shame in auto form.
Not only that, but the Prius might actually survive seven years without an oil change.

not the acura. at all. those motors needed prem fuel and oil changed every 6K with synth, thanks to turbos.
your brother in law is an idiot BTW

He's going to keep oil in this one, right?
And 4runner fur sure.

I have a feeling the lack of oil will kill the turbocharger before the engine.
This could be a safety measure. $1500 vs $4000 for replacement?

Avoid Xterra, its junk. If your budget is 10-15K you're better off looking at a newer 4runner, which is the best car in this group. Even better if you can find one with a V8, will run forever, just please remember to add oil/pay attention to idiot lights!

Also, the acura requires premium fuel, and has a turbo. It will not survive long with your BIL's abuse.

4runner all around. You can't kill those things.
![]() 10/30/2014 at 14:22 |

Yeah, but if the turbo fails first, it may get the car to the shop before the engine seizes. :)

I would pick the RDX, because turbo.

The Acura seems like the best value for the price, I know it is awfully CRV like. The 4Runner would be my choice if not for the funny business on the right side rear door...looks a bit crumpled. At that price for 15 year old vehicle, it had better look mint. Something happens and he can get that 4Runner for $7000? Sure buy it. He can't buy the Nissan, IMHO it isn't going to put up with shortcuts on maintenance (keeping oil in the engine) like the others.

Very good point.

he should be allowed to have nice things. But if he absolutely must have an SUV he should just get a s-10 blazer. These things are dirt cheap and pretty much indestructible. If he manages to kill it, you can recoup most of the purchase price in scrap value.

yeah 6K if your grandma only drives it to the shops and back! Closer to 4-5K and full synth change. Source: Driving a SAAB 9-5, wouldn't dare go more than 6K between changes

I already suggested $2-3K beaters for this very reason. Lather, rinse, neglect, repeat.

it sounds like he needs something cheap and disposable, since he can't be bothered with routine maintenance. The 4runner is dog slow but reliable if you watch the oil leakage and make sure the timing belt has been done.
The Acura I know nothing about
The xterra is not well known for its 100,000 miles + durability.

What's the service interval for the belt? 90K 100K?
![]() 10/30/2014 at 14:43 |
|
its 8 years or 100k, whatever is first.
![]() 10/30/2014 at 14:49 |

Cool, thanks. I see the Nissan has a chain, and I'm guessing the Acura isn't near the interval yet (with 84K)
Sucks that these are trade-ins, and probably won't have any service records with them.

He needs something that will run without oil in it.
That something is a vehicle with GM's 4.3L V6 in it.
If it has to be one of those, the 4Runner would probably be the most reliable for his "needs"

My dad went 25k miles on his last conventional oil change in his 4.3L powered Jimmy. He was trying to kill it, finally he gave up and sold it for $1000 with 275k on the clock running like a top to buy a pickup.

weird, our 93 took 6K between changes....
![]() 10/30/2014 at 15:53 |

Have him get the X-Terra. It's the cheapest one so it won't fuck their budget too badly when he kills it.
EDIT: Make the fucker get an '85 Fiero 2M4 automatic.
![]() 10/31/2014 at 08:41 |

well 9-3 is not the same as 9-5. 4-5K is my personal change interval. I also have the TD04 turbo and a stage 1 tune so I'm much more cautious

Quart of oil will be an excellent gift. You should also make a chart explaining what all the different warning lights mean, and hang it from the rear view mirror.

You should wrap a case of oil with 2 oil filters and put it under the tree.
